What radio frequency therapy is
Radio frequency devices deliver electromagnetic energy that heats the dermis while leaving the skin surface relatively cool. In aesthetic dermatology, RF has a long track record for skin tightening because controlled dermal heating triggers collagen remodeling.
The hair growth application borrows that same mechanism. Proponents argue that increased dermal blood flow, neocollagenesis around the follicular unit, and thermal stimulation of dermal papilla cells could push follicles back into the growth phase.
What the evidence actually shows
The evidence base is early. Small pilot studies and case series report increases in hair density and shaft thickness after fractional RF and RF microneedling protocols, and some show improved outcomes when RF is combined with topical agents. Large randomized controlled trials with adequate follow-up are largely absent.
That gap matters. Pilot data tells you something might work. It does not tell you how much, for whom, or for how long. We say that plainly because the alternative is charging people for hope.
How it compares to proven treatments
PRP has multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses supporting increased hair density in androgenetic alopecia. Low-level laser therapy holds FDA clearance for pattern hair loss and has consistent trial data behind it. Microneedling has controlled trials showing meaningful gains, especially when paired with topical minoxidil. RF sits well behind all three on evidence quality.
Our perspective
We follow the data. When the evidence supporting RF for hair growth reaches the threshold we require, we will add it to the protocol menu. Until then, we would rather send you home with a treatment plan that has trial support behind it. Being early to a trend costs clients money and months.
What we recommend instead
For non-invasive growth stimulation, LLLT is the practical starting point and works well as home maintenance between visits. For clients ready for in-clinic regenerative work, PRP and mesotherapy remain the core of our protocols. Which one fits depends on your diagnosis, and that comes from imaging rather than a menu.
